Similar to apples, you could dip strawberries in just about any kind of melted chocolate and refrigerate them, and they would pass as a premium Valentine's Day gift. This February in the Province of Canada kitchen, we found the perfect balance of flavour and texture with dark chocolate and almond coated strawberries.
Side note: There's no shame in bringing out the fondue pot for a stay-at-home Valentine's date night if you find yourself pressed for time.
The Recipe
Ingredients
1/4 cup almond slivers
20+ strawberries
3 Lindt dark chocolate bars
1 tbsp vegetable oil
2 cups water
Directions
Bring a pot of 2 cups water to a boil on the stovetop.
Place a stainless steel bowl (the size of the pot) on top of the boiling water.
Break chocolate into small pieces and add into the bowl. Allow them to melt.
Once melted, stir in vegetable oil. This will add gloss to the chocolate and ensure it "cracks" off the strawberry when eaten.
One by one, dip the strawberries into the melted chocolate and place on a baking sheet lined by parchment paper.
Decorate strawberries with almond slivers and refrigerate overnight.
Baker's Tip
For glam points, wait until the strawberries are cooled to drizzle on white chocolate. To do this, dip a fork into a bowl of microwaved white chocolate chips and whisk over the strawberries in a horizontal motion. Cool for 20-30 minutes.
